Dark Roast: Come over to the dark side
Because these beans roast longer and hotter, they become distinctly darker than their lighter roast counterparts, with the roasting process coaxing out an oily sheen that coats the beans. The internal temperature of the beans can reach anywhere between 430 and 450 degrees Fahrenheit and creates an audible second crack in the coffee roasters.
As the beans lose more moisture, they also lose acidity and release more oils — creating a fuller body and bold aroma, with a dense and balanced flavor profile. This coffee roasting process also brings out the distinct nutty, smoky, or dark chocolate tasting notes that all dark coffee lovers enjoy.
Is dark roast coffee stronger than light roast coffee? It depends on how you brew it. If a stronger cup is what you’re after, use less water when you’re brewing your dark roast to get your desired coffee taste. The caffeine punch will remain pretty much the same across our entire spectrum of roasts, but the flavors will vary depending on the type of coffee bean and the roast level.
If you’re having trouble picking the best dark roast coffee for you, check out the dark roast bundle and consider subscribing to your favorite. It won’t be long before you become a dark roast lover yourself and raid our collection of bulk 5lb coffee bags.
